School in 2009 Amy

School in 2009 is very fun when you are in your classroom. Our school is just missing something, a bigger playground at our school. Everday at school I am not bored, I am enjoying it very, very much. After school we have to go and get our bags, then we can go and line up for our buses and then we can go home.

Te Kawau Athletics at Massey

The most exciting thing that happened was, I went into the finals for the 100 metres. Abby

It was exciting when we got there and we were already to race. Michelle

Doing the sprints was the best, I tried my hardest, I came last but I was still happy. Jonathon

Coming 3rd in the long jump was exciting for me. Drew

I was surprised I came 3rd in the running against all the 5's and 6's. Amba

In the Long Jump, I went across the white line and then too far back because I couldn't see the line very well. Then I went on top of the line which was good. Jessica

Athletics Day

It was Oroua Downs school Athletics Day on Friday the 6th November. There were heaps of events like running, high jump, long jump, discuss and shot put.First there were running races then the finals. Then there was high jump we tryed our hardest, then we had to move on to long jump and we were running and jumping as long as we could go.Then we moved on to discus and we had two goes each. The horn blew and we moved on.It was a hot day, we had one more event to go and it was shot put. We had the ball in one hand then we pushed the ball and it went flying out of our hand then the teacher marked our landing. So it was a fun day.

My Lamb Barbie

The best thing about my lamb is leading and brushing it and cuddling it.
At Calf and Lamb Day, when I called her, she ran away. But I got 2 second ribbons and 1 cup. I was really happy.

Looking After my Calf Abby

At home we had to wash our calves with shampoo and brush them all the time and feed them twice a day . When it came to school, Mum had to feed them that morning. I got two 3rds and one 2nd. I was really happy.

Calf and Lamb Day, I just want to congratulate Ryan, he won six cups! Wow! Also thanks to the parents who came to help.
Thank you to the people who served drinks, coffee and tea, and the Barbeque ladies. And I thought the kids did a great job on their mosaic bricks and tiles and canvases.

Kids Zone By Zac

My tile is not for my mum, it is for me and my dad and my Friends. There's only allowed to be kids in my room, but not my brother or sister.

My Door Tile By: Michelle

My tile was hard to paint because there were lots of lines. I didn't get to finish it because I ran out of time. The next day I had to do the rest of my tile. The finishing touch was GIRLS ONLY.

Racing Rima’s September/ October Holiday Poems

Holiday Activity

I went to the Pahiatua track
To pitch off snow,
Covering the road,
Blocks out the way.
I jump out,
I trip over,
Still having fun,
Snow down my back,
Time to go home.

By: Caden

Holiday

In the holidays
You get a break off school.
I went up to the snow,
We had tea had my cousin’s house.
Roast chicken and vegetables,
Pumpkin, potatoes and gravy.
For desert, we had some icecream,
Pavlova and milkshakes too.
Then I went to bed.

By: Ethan

Wargames

Guns firing,
People having good fun,
Seeing people having a good time,
I like this holiday.

Going to Palmerston North,
See you at Civic Videos, said Mum.
We find videos,
Then we go home,
I wish the holidays would keep on going!

By Justin

Going to the Beach

I went by foot, softly,
In the soft sand.
I went in the entrance,
I saw the river gushing by,
I saw the driftwood floating down it,
I nearly travelled to Foxton
And then I went back home.

By: Renee

Holidays

My holidays were stressful.
Taihape roads were blocked with snow.
And……. oh, no!
Home we go!
Then up again we go.
What’s that?
Closed again!
Looked for somewhere to sleep,
All booked out!
Home we go!

By: Michelle

Grandma’s Houses

When I went to Grandma’s house
It was such fun
Running up and down the hills
Playing around.

I was having fun
So were Grandma’s dogs.
We were having so much fun
That I didn’t know
How much time had passed,
So quickly,
And then I had to go home.

Peace flag Nathan

I was holding the flag with some other kids and I liked it because I was getting a picture with them, it was cool doing that. That was the best thing I have ever done in the world. No fighting at school or at home.

Peace Makers Visit - Zac

The Peace marchers told us about peace marching and they held the flag up. The flag had a peace sign on it and coloured stripes. They want to get rid off the killing and they want as to listen and not fight. I liked playing their pipes and the drum. Boom Boom, peace!! Boom Boom, peace!!

Shannon Golf Course Cross Country - Curt

The Cross Country was so fun because I beat Zayne. And it was hard work because I started to puff. Drew came 1st, she told me
she felt completely exhausted and proud of herself. Michelle
came 8th. Oroua Downs did well!!

My Invention By: Michelle Roache

When I went to the Science Road Show, the people there said
if we want to we can make our own inventions, so I made my invention. I had trouble thinking what I should make, then it hit me. I finely knew what I should make, so I made a DRINKING HAT. And when I made it, first I got some cardboard and then I
wrapped it up in a circle sort of shape, second I ate some yogurt then I washed the yogurt container. After that I got the sellotape, then sellotaped the yogurt container to the drinking hat, now you've got your hat with the straw. This is a good sipper hat

'I Saw It First" Skit members - LeGrand, Nathan, Kane and Logan.
Mum, Dad and Sarah and Thomas are off

on holiday.

It seems to take a loooong time to get there.

Te Kawau Schools Cultural Evening - Oroua Downs

Jump Jam Girls are ready to Perform, looking very smart Cowgirls. Our school choir sang their hearts out. They were marvellous!

The Cultural Show - from the Audience

When I was watching the Show, I saw Sanson School doing Greased Lightening. It's an olden days song and everyone was clapping. I liked the choir singing, they sang great.
Kennedy's Jump Jam dance looked all blue and green. The skits were good, I laughed when the kids poked each other, and the kids were good at acting.
I thought the Show was really awesome.

Corbin

Jump Jam at the Regent

The Jump Jam looked awesome from upstairs because the background had coloured stars and the costumes looked cool as.

Dale

We got to wear flowers in our hair. I felt really small because there was a big audience. The cowboy hats were sparkly and were different colours. The audience enjoyed us, we got a big clap.

Michelle

The Cultural Festival -September 15th

I really enjoyed being up on the stage at the Regent Theatre doing our skit because the everyone laughed. I think the audience thought it was funny.
I would like to say congratulations to all the other schools that put in a lot of effort.
I liked the Kung Fu fighting part of the show because the I knew the song and they had a good beat.
The singing sounded awesome because everyone put in their best effort.

When we went to Mr and Mrs Sketcher's workshop to see all his cool things he's made. We saw two motorbikes, one is a sidecar and one is a four seater. His Golf trundler and stockcar are made out of iron and he can make korus and can make big ones as well.

Fun in the Holidays

Well, I went to my Gran's and Amba came with me, and my cousins were there but the funny thing was, that in the spa my cousin Cain had a string(all of us were given a string by my Gran.) Anyway, Cain got his and pretended he was the crocodile hunter and he said ''Oh crickey it's a big one!''.And then the string snapped so we all started to crack up laughing. Then one string slipped out of Cain's hand and it fell in the spa.I dived as fast as I could and I caught it and then gave it back to my cousin. That's about the funniest thing that happened in the holidays.

Yesterday we made butterflies and I learnt two things, and the two things I learnt were, not to do the drawing on the wrong side and not to draw on both sides. I was pleased with it when I opened it up.

Justin
In the Earthquake Simulator

The simulator was fun and it felt extraordinary, and it shook from side to side. If it was real, I would freak out!

Curt
In the Earthquake Simulator

It felt like it was going to tip over and it felt really dizzy.
The chair was moving around! If it was real, I would be really frightened.

Corbin
Half an Apple Each

I can hear the apple smash in my mouth. It is my favourite in the world. I can taste the juice go down my throat, it is yum because it tastes like oranges.

Nathan
What is it?

It smells like vitamins and it looks like a prickly tree. It is good for a good soup because it has a good taste. You can put it on chicken. It feels like grass and petals, and the stalk is skinny and spiky.

Cody

It is green, I think from a tree, but I don’t know.
It is nice because it smells like a lemon, sort of, because it is smelly.

Taylor

It smells like grass and it is not fat.
It has green on one side and white on the other side. The leaf is easy to break. It is very light. It looks like a rainbow when you break it.

When we made our Geometry pictures, we made a design first in our Maths book, by drawing around shapes. Then we made our pictures on black paper with coloured shapes. My one is a spider falling off a chair.

I made circles, squares and an octogan to make my picture. I liked doing it.

Amba's thoughts about Heroes

When I first heard about the Heroes project, I thought that it would be hard, and so it was, but it was fun and worth finding out about. And what I found interesting was that a Hero can be anyone, but only a good person and someone that means well.

Heroes don't have to be Super Heroes, they could be like Lauren's Firefighter mum that saved people from fires in houses and buildings. And Mr Purdie that saved people in the bush, or even worse. Or like Brigadier Torrance, the Army man who told us about how he survived in Vietnam.

And also like the Olympic swimmer,Danyon Loader, Norbert Hausberg, the Puppeteer and the 'Wok and Wol' Puppeteer.

So a hero can be anyone and they can be like the teachers at Oroua Downs, and I think that heros are very cool to teach people and save people and things.

Heroes can be people that sell food or clothes to help us survive especially food because if we did not have food we'd die.

So heroes can be anyone. Heroes are almost everyone that we see every day because they've probably done something special, very special as well. But like Brigadier Torrance, some are bigger heroes than others.

A hero could be someone at this school, for example Drew or Michelle or anyone!!

A hero could be someone that's done something very simple, like saving a cat or something that maybe is very ugly but special.

A hero could be an animal because I've heard of a dog that saved a human from drowning in a lake.

So a hero can be ANYONE. So are YOU a HERO?

Heroes- Mr and Mrs Purdie

Mr and Mrs Purdie are part of the Search and Rescue team.

They help people who are lost, and if you have a gun, you can shoot 3

times in the air. They might find you if there are searchers are nearby.

Cody

Search and Rescue people are Heroes

Search and Rescue

When Mr Purdie came to my school, I learnt you have to have spare clothes and they have to be long thermal clothes.
If you have to go to the toilet in the bush, you dig a hole in the ground, away from a stream and squat down into the hole and do what you have to do in the hole, then cover the hole up.
If you are going on a tramping trip you need:
1 clothes
2 food
3 compass
4 torch

Search and Rescue Heroes

When Mr and Mrs Purdie came to Oroua Downs School,
Mr Purdie told us about their life in Search and Rescue.
If you got lost, you have to stay put. Wear bright clothes,
colours like pink, orange, green and yelow. They stand
out if you are in a stream or in a clearing. If a helicopter
comes past, it can pick you up. You need a compass too.

Michelle

My mum, my Hero

She liked playing with her friends
at school. She has a sister Nanette and
a brother Antony . She went to school in
Wellington.
My Mum cleans and sleeps.
She helps me make my bed and do the
dishes .Shes my Hero

Kquade

Mum,my hero

I chose my mum to be my Hero because she saved me from glass. She said, ‘watch out quickly!’ before I stepped on the glass.
There was glass everywhere. One day she saved me from soap that could get in my eyes. She saves me all the time.
My mum likes shopping so much and she likes swimming too.
When she went to school, she liked playing on the playground.
She’s my HERO.

Tyrone

My Dad ,my Hero

I am going to tell you about my dad. My dad had to put out a fire that was coming towords our house and he had to use lots and lots of water. My dad saved a whale by lots and lots of hard work. He had to walk the whale out to sea so it could swim back to sea. When my dad was a kid his favourite soft toy was a teddy bear, its name was Browny. My dad went to Newlands school in Wellington, he said he didn’t like the teachers at that school.
When I was born my dad and mum and my sister Angela all lived in Feilding, we lived down Pharison street. Dad always uses the virtue of patience. He always helps me with my homework when I’m stuck. He is my hero, he is the best!!!

Michelle

Search and Rescue

When Mr Purdie came, I learnt a lot about safety, it was really interesting when he told us about hyperthermia. When you get cold, you start to shiver, then you stop and go quiet . After you go quiet you get sleepy but you mustn't go to sleep because if you do, you will never wake up. Mr Purdie is one of the people that go and helps out at the communication centre. But sometimes he goes with the people to try and find the person or people that get lost.

Rumplestiltskin Kquqde

I liked the part when the sock puppet bit him

on the ear and he screamed. The horse fell down,

it was funny. The puppet had a control.

Rumplestiltskin's hair went up and he had

a hole in his head. He donked his head on the gold.

Making Puppets

You can make puppets out of magazines, newspaper, and cardboard and you can use string.
Socks are good, hands and fingers are handy. My Aunty Michelle has some and the colours are yellow, black and your hand colour. They are fun to use, you can act them. Our Puppet
Show was about friendliness and meeting each other.

use any sellotape this time. We liked doing the puppet shows which we made up.

Heroes

In Racing Rima, we are looking at "what does it take to be a Hero."

At present we're reading about people, some famous and some,

maybe like us, who are or find themselves in challenging situations,

for a variety of reasons. What qualities do these Heroes [people] have?

We've found out already, that most heroes have the support, of one

or more other people.

We're looking forward to listening to some real live Heroes.

Maybe it's you, we'd love you to share your story with us.

Skinning a deer : By Amba

In the holidays I went to my Uncles.
We went up to a wool shed on the motor bike,
and there were three deer, we were going to
skin and so I helped.
The deer skin outside is soft but inside
it is slimy.
We hung the deer meat up in the freezer.
